How to build a capsule wardrobe for autumn

Autumn is the easiest season to dress for once you stop buying pieces one at a time. A small, considered set of clothes that all work together means fewer mornings staring at the wardrobe and more outfits from less. Here is the twelve-piece formula we come back to every year.

Start with three knits

A crew-neck jumper in oatmeal or camel does the quiet, everyday work. A longline cardigan is the layer you throw over a shirt on a mild day and over a dress when the evening cools. One chunky roll neck earns its place from November onwards. Keep the palette close — cream, camel, chocolate, a single deep green or rust — and every knit will pair with every bottom you own.

One coat that does everything

If your week is mostly town and errands, a belted trench in stone takes you from September to the first frost. If you spend more time outdoors, a parka with a proper hood will get more wear than anything tailored. A wool overcoat is the third option when you want one smart layer for evenings. Pick one for the season rather than three you never quite reach for.

Boots you can walk in

Ankle boots with a low block heel are the daily pair: school run, office, supermarket. Knee-highs in suede or leather turn a dress or a midi skirt into an outfit with no thought at all. Both should feel comfortable in the first hour, not the fifth wear — see our boot fit guide if you are between sizes.

Putting it together

Trench, oatmeal crew neck, dark jeans, ankle boots: the Monday uniform. Knee-high boots, wool midi skirt, roll neck and the same trench: dinner without changing. Cardigan over a floral midi dress with ankle boots: the weekend. Three outfits, one small wardrobe, and nothing bought that will not be worn.
